Bob, age 66, was enjoying an active retirement—until he found himself sidelined by pain on the inner side of his left knee.

‘Arthritis? Not me!’

“When I went to my family doctor, the first thing he told me was, ‘Bob, you've got arthritis,’” he recalls.

“I said, ‘I don't think so!’” Bob laughs. “I'm an active guy—I've been playing tennis for 20 years, and golf for even longer than that. And I've been umpiring high school baseball since 1979.”

Bob had physical therapy and knee injections, but the pain persisted. Then he started feeling unstable when going down stairs.

“Every time I stepped on my left foot, it felt like my knee was going to buckle,” he recalls. “I didn't have any strength in my leg. I told my family doctor, ‘This therapy isn't working.’”

Bob's family doctor ordered x-rays and told him, “There's no meniscus left on the inside of your knee.” That's when the doctor referred Bob to Dr. John Krebs.

‘You're a candidate
for a partial knee replacement’

“Dr. Krebs looked at my x-rays and said, ‘Everything in your knee looks great, except for the right side,’” Bob recalls. “Then he told me, ‘You're a candidate for a partial knee replacement.’”

CFO's Dr. Krebs and Dr. Willliam Stanfield are the only orthopedic surgeons in northeast Ohio trained to perform MAKOplasty, a state-of-the-art procedure for patients who have arthritis in only part of the knee. “Eighty-five percent of people who suffer from knee arthritis have it in only one component of the knee,” says Dr. Krebs.

“MAKOplasty uses robotics to help us precisely resurface and replace only the part of the knee that's arthritic,” he

explains. “It leaves the normal 2/3 of the knee intact. We don't change the knee's alignment or its stability.

“After MAKOplasty, patients are able to run, play tennis and do everything they could do before—without the pain,” Dr. Krebs explains.

Bob had MAKOplasty and started playing golf again just five weeks later. “I've umpired 18 baseball games so far this season,” he says, “and I've been riding my bike with my family.

“I try to keep active,” Bob adds. “If you're not active, you'll get old in a hurry.”

Can MAKOplasty help prevent the need for a total knee replacement?

MAKOplasty can stop the progression of arthritis because it puts a stable surface on an area that would continue to wear down if you did nothing to it. I believe partial knee resurfacing can prevent arthritis from progressing to the point where you would need a total knee replacement.
