Fellowship training: Sports medicine/arthroscopy

Dr. Daniel Zanotti, a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopy, has practiced at the Center for Orthopedics since 2003.

“My fellowship training enables me to do many things through the camera or arthroscope that most general orthopedists aren't able to do,” he explains. “Nearly all of my shoulder procedures are done arthroscopically, as well as many elbow, wrist, knee, hip, foot and ankle procedures.”

During his sports medicine fellowship at the prestigious Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, Dr. Zanotti served as a team physician for the Los Angeles Lakers, Dodgers, Sparks, Galaxy and Kings, as well as the Anaheim Angels and Mighty Ducks.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is licensed to practice medicine in Ohio, California and Pennsylvania.

Dr. Zanotti travels around the U.S. to teach other orthopedists the latest arthroscopic techniques. He has conducted numerous presentations at national and regional medical meetings and has been a course instructor at Penn State University's Department of Orthopaedics as well as Arthrex Surgical Laboratory in Naples, Fla.

He also has served as a team physician for Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles; Hershey Bears Minor League Hockey in Hershey, Pa.; the Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, Calif. Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP); as well as Clearview High School in Lorain, Ohio.

Dr. Zanotti's interest in sports medicine grew out of his own experience as an athlete. “I played basketball in college, so I've always been around athletes,” he explains. “And I've been around injuries just from playing so many sports, so sport medicine was a natural interest of mine.”

He doesn't limit his definition of “athlete” to professional or even high school or college players. “I consider athletes anyone from age 5 to 85,” Dr. Zanotti explains. “It's just a question of whether you enjoy being active and participating in certain activities and want to get back to doing them. These are the patients I enjoy taking care of most.”

Dr. Zanotti completed his orthopedic residency and general surgery internship at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa., and holds a doctor of medicine degree from Pennsylvania State University.

He is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society as well as Sigma Xi, a scientific research society.

Dr. Zanotti enjoys basketball, golf, tennis, running and skiing. His other hobbies include winemaking and wine collecting, fly-fishing, travel, photography and cooking.

Meet Dr. Dan Zanotti's patient care team

Dr. Dan Zanotti's patient care team includes his secretary, Rhonda Bishop.

“Rhonda has been my secretary since I started at the Center for Orthopedics in 2003,” says Dr. Zanotti. “She helps patients schedule all of their tests and surgeries, and can solve many problems you might encounter with insurance and billing issues. Rhonda is always available to help you whenever you ask.”

“I enjoy helping people and making sure you are well-informed about the procedure you are about to have,” says Rhonda.

What is orthopedic fellowship training?

A fellowship is extra training—usually one year—beyond the training required by the national governing body to practice orthopedics. This training is done after an orthopedist completes medical school, internship and residency. Some orthopedists decide to do extra training in a particular area of interest, such as sports medicine or hand surgery.

“A fellowship provides you with an opportunity to practice in a way that most other orthopedists don't have access to,” says Daniel Zanotti, MD. “You learn techniques and different procedures that someone else might not know about.”
