William B. Stanfield, MD

Specialties: Joint replacement, sports medicine, arthroscopy

Dr. William Stanfield, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement, sports medicine and arthroscopy, is the medical director of the Center for Orthopedics, where he has practiced since 1997.

Dr. Stanfield is one of the first orthopedic surgeons in America to perform hip resurfacing surgery, an alternative to hip replacement for younger, more active patients. “Hip resurfacing is a procedure that's been done in Europe for over 10 years, but it's relatively new to the United States,” he says.

“Rather than removing the worn-out femoral head or the ball part of the ball-and-socket hip joint, we just machine it and resurface it with a metal cap,” Dr. Stanfield explains. “It's a more anatomic procedure than a total hip replacement and it allows a more active lifestyle afterwards.”

Dr. Stanfield performs more than 200 joint replacement surgery procedures a year. “It has been shown that surgeons who do more than 50 joint replacements a year have better results,” he notes.

In addition to hip resurfacing, Dr. Stanfield performs minimally invasive hip and knee replacements through much smaller incisions than many orthopedic surgeons. “I do total hip replacements through a four- to five-inch incision, which minimizes the trauma to the tissues,” he explains.

Dr. Stanfield is a native of northeast Ohio. “I grew up in Vermillion, which is just 5 to 10 miles west of where I practice, so I'm home now,” he says.

He realized early in life that he wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon. “My high school tennis partner's father was an orthopedic surgeon in town,” Dr. Stanfield recalls. “I went to work with him a few times and knew what I wanted to do before I even started college. I always wanted to do orthopedics—sports medicine in particular.”

Dr. Stanfield has served as head team physician at Steele High School in Amherst, Ohio since 1997.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is licensed to practice medicine in Ohio.

Dr. Stanfield completed his orthopedic surgery residency and general surgery internship at St. Luke's Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and holds a doctor of medicine degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Ohio State Medical Association, the Cleveland Orthopaedic Society and the Lorain County Medical Society.

Dr. Stanfield is married, has two children and lives in Avon Lake, Ohio.

Meet Dr. Stanfield's patient care team

Dr. Stanfield's patient care team includes his physician assistant, Sherry Hall, his medical assistant, Kelly Pridemore and his secretary, Sharon Ferancy.

“Sherry has worked with me since 2005,” Dr. Stanfield explains. “She helps me to see patients in the office and she's my first assistant in the operating room. Sherry is with me every day and assists me with patient care.”

“I have been a physician assistant since 2002 and began working with Dr. Stanfield in 2005,” says Sherry. “I enjoy working in an orthopedic office setting where I am able to see and treat patients' pre- and post- surgical needs.”

“My medical assistant, Kelly Pridemore, is responsible for keeping the clinic running smoothly and for completing patient paperwork,” Dr. Stanfield explains. “She does a great job of organizing day-to-day activities.”

“I have been with Dr. Stanfield since 2006,” says Kelly. “I enjoy working at the Center for Orthopedics and it is gratifying to know I am able to help patients with their medical needs.”

“My secretary, Sharon Ferancy, has been with me since 1997,” says Dr. Stanfield. “She's never allowed to retire because she's the greatest secretary in the world,” he laughs. “Sharon is professional, organized and detail-oriented—a valuable asset to our team.”

“I help schedule your tests and surgery,” Sharon explains. “I enjoy working with patients and have met a lot of nice people.”
