Because no two knees are alike...

OtisKnee® Custom Fit Knee® Replacement offers better results than conventional knee replacement surgery

  • Improved implant fit and knee alignment
  • A more natural-feeling knee
  • Bone- and ligament-sparing
  • Less surgical risk, faster recovery
  • Greater range of motion

Everyone's knees are different due to factors such as age, gender, ethnicity and lifestyle. These differences can have a tremendous impact on the success of knee replacement surgery. Even slight variations in the way a knee implant fits can lead to pain, stiffness, instability and potentially shorter implant life.

What is OtisKnee Custom Fit Knee Replacement?

OtisKnee is a new surgical technique that allows orthopedic surgeons to offer Custom Fit Knee replacement. This means that you will receive a knee replacement tailor-made for your own body.

How does OtisKnee Custom Fit Knee Replacement work?

  1. Before surgery, you will have an MRI to take very precise measurements of your arthritic knee.
  2. Special computer software will use the MRI to build a three-dimensional (3-D) model of your arthritic knee. Then the software will virtually correct the deformity to restore your knee's normal anatomy.
  3. A computerized 3-D image of the implant to be used in your surgery is ShapeMatchedTM to the anatomically correct model. This helps determine the exact size and placement of your knee implant, based on your normal anatomy.
  4. Using this information, special OtisKnee cutting guides are created for your surgeon to use during your knee replacement procedure.

‘The OtisKnee technique uses virtual reconstruction to determine the proper size and fit for your knee replacement—eliminating the two biggest causes of revision knee replacement.’

William Stanfield, MD

Result: A custom-fit knee replacement designed especially for you.

Few surgeons offer this state-of-the-art procedure

The board-certified orthopedic surgeons at the Center for Orthopedics are among a limited number of advanced-trained orthopedic surgeons in the U.S. certified to perform OtisKnee Custom Fit Knee Replacement.

Dr. Stanfield answers questions about OtisKnee® Custom Fit Knee Replacement

What makes OtisKnee a better choice than conventional knee replacement?

"The two biggest problems with joint replacement are artificial joints that are:

‘A lot of baby boomers come in saying they're ready for a total knee replacement rather than waiting until they have advanced arthritis. Why live with the pain?’

William Stanfield, MD

  • Not properly positioned
  • Not properly sized

"OtisKnee solves both of these problems—customizing the position and size of your knee implant for the best fit."

What is the difference between OtisKnee and conventional knee replacement?

"Traditional knee replacement surgery requires drilling into the thigh bone and sometimes cutting the posterior cruciate ligament in the knee. This drilling and cutting increases surgical risk and post-operative pain, and lengthens recovery time.

"OtisKnee uses custom fit technology to ensure proper alignment of the replacement knee. Up to 40% less bone is cut from the thigh bone and all ligaments are spared, giving a more natural-feeling knee, less post-operative pain and a faster recovery."

What determines whether OtisKnee or a conventional knee replacement is right for me?

“The decision is based on the preference of you and your physician. There are certain patients who can't get an MRI because they have a pacemaker or a prosthetic valve replacement—so they can't get the 3-D reconstruction that's required to do an OtisKnee.

“Other patients who have severe deformity in their knee tend to do better with a more-constrained knee replacement, which we can't do with the OtisKnee. Patients with very advanced knee arthritis also are not good candidates for OtisKnee custom fit knee replacement.”

How does recovery differ between conventional knee replacement and OtisKnee?

"After conventional knee replacement surgery, patients are typically in the hospital for three days. They normally spend six weeks walking with a cane or walker, and return to normal activities in about 12 weeks.

"After OtisKnee Custom Fit Knee Replacement, patients spend two to three days in the hospital and have less pain after surgery. Most patients are off a cane or walker in two or three weeks, regain their range of motion sooner than with traditional knee replacement surgery, and can return to their normal activities in eight to 10 weeks."

Does insurance cover OtisKnee Custom Fit Knee Replacement?

"Like other knee replacement procedures, OtisKnee is typically covered by health insurance. The Center for Orthopedics accepts a wide range of insurance plans. Please call our office at 440.329.2800 if you have questions about your insurance coverage. We'll be happy to help you."

How long is an OtisKnee expected to last?

"An OtisKnee Custom Fit Knee Replacement is expected to last at least as long as a traditional knee replacement—12 to 15 years—and possibly longer due to its improved sizing and alignment."

Patient success story

Patient compares her own experience with OtisKnee vs. traditional knee replacement

How does OtisKnee Custom Fit Knee Replacement compare with traditional total knee replacement? We asked Patricia, a 64-year-old arthritis patient who had a traditional total knee replacement on her right knee in 2004—and an OtisKnee Custom Fit Knee Replacement on her left knee two and a half weeks ago.
